Few laptop problems are more frustrating than plugging in your charger and realising that nothing is happening.
Perhaps the charging light refuses to come on, the battery percentage stays exactly where it is, or the laptop only charges when you hold the cable in a certain position. In some cases, the laptop may not even switch on at all.
There are quite a few possible reasons why a laptop might stop charging. The problem could be as simple as a faulty plug socket or damaged charger, although battery faults, charging port damage and internal hardware problems are also possibilities.
Working through the most common causes can help you narrow down the issue and decide whether you need professional laptop repair.
Check the Power Supply First
Before assuming something is wrong with the laptop itself, it is worth checking the power source. Plug another electrical device into the same socket to make sure it is actually providing power.
If you are using an extension lead or surge protector, try connecting the laptop charger directly to a wall socket instead.
Some laptop chargers have an LED indicator showing whether they are receiving power. If your charger normally has a light but it is no longer illuminated, there could be a problem with either the charger or the electrical supply.

Check the Laptop Charging Port

One obvious sign of a damaged charging port is having to move the cable around before the laptop starts charging.
The connection might also repeatedly appear and disappear when the cable is touched. Dust and debris can sometimes build up inside the port, too, preventing the connector from sitting properly.
Avoid forcing anything into the charging port, as this may cause additional damage.
Could the Laptop Battery Be the Problem?
Laptop batteries do not last forever. Most gradually lose capacity as they go through repeated charging cycles, which means an older laptop may eventually struggle to hold a charge or stop charging altogether.
A failing battery might also drop from a high percentage to almost empty, surprisingly quickly.
Other warning signs include the battery refusing to charge beyond a certain percentage or the laptop switching off as soon as the charger is removed.
Some laptops will continue working perfectly well when connected to mains power, even if the battery itself has failed. If this happens, replacing the battery may be enough to solve the problem.
Why Does My Laptop Say “Plugged In, Not Charging”?
Windows users sometimes encounter a message saying that their laptop is plugged in but not charging. It looks worrying, although it does not always mean something has broken.
Some laptops include battery protection settings designed to extend battery lifespan by limiting how much the battery charges.
For example, the manufacturer may allow the battery to stop charging at around 80 per cent if the laptop spends most of its time connected to mains power.
Checking the manufacturer’s battery management software may reveal whether a charging limit has been enabled. If no such feature is active, the message could point towards a battery, charger or software problem.
Software and Driver Problems
Charging problems are not always caused by physical hardware. Occasionally, Windows power settings or battery drivers can stop communicating correctly with the laptop’s charging system.
This may happen after a software update or seemingly without any obvious cause.
A simple restart is worth trying first. You can also check whether Windows updates or manufacturer driver updates are available.
Reinstalling battery related drivers through Device Manager may resolve certain charging problems, although it is best to be cautious when changing drivers if you are unfamiliar with the process.
Laptop Overheating and Charging Problems
Modern laptops have safety systems designed to protect the battery and internal components from excessive heat. If the laptop becomes too hot, charging may slow down or stop temporarily until temperatures return to a safer level.
Blocked ventilation is a common cause of overheating, particularly on laptops that have been used for several years without being cleaned internally. Dust can collect around fans and heatsinks, making it difficult for heat to escape.
Using a laptop on a bed, sofa, or blanket can make matters worse by covering the ventilation openings. If the laptop feels unusually hot, allow it to cool and make sure its vents are unobstructed.
Internal Hardware Faults
If the charger, battery and charging port all seem fine, the problem may be inside the laptop. Charging circuits, power management components and motherboard connections can fail, particularly following electrical damage, liquid spills or physical impact.
These faults can be much harder to identify without specialist equipment. A technician may need to test different components and measure power throughout the laptop to find where the fault is occurring.
Opening the laptop and attempting repairs without the right knowledge can easily cause further damage, especially with increasingly compact modern machines.
Should You Replace the Charger or Get the Laptop Repaired?
Buying a new charger might seem like the obvious solution, but it is worth confirming that the charger is actually the problem first.
If possible, testing the laptop with a known working compatible charger can help determine whether your existing adapter has failed.
If another charger makes no difference, replacing chargers repeatedly is unlikely to solve anything. The fault may instead lie with the battery, charging socket or internal circuitry.
Having the laptop properly diagnosed can often be cheaper than buying several replacement parts and hoping one of them fixes the problem.

Some charging issues can be investigated safely at home, but there are situations where professional help is a much better option.
If you notice a burning smell, sparks, excessive heat, a visibly damaged charging socket or a laptop that has completely stopped responding, disconnect the charger and avoid continuing to use it.
A computer repair technician can test the charger, battery, charging port and internal power components to identify what is actually causing the issue.
This can be particularly useful when several symptoms overlap. What initially looks like a dead battery, for example, may turn out to be a damaged charging port or motherboard problem.
